Wk 6 - going forward, and lit review

(Small notes from last term)

Feeling happy after critiques last week - I feel like the works I put forward are doing what I need them to, and the feedback from others was helpful in figuring out the gaps and possible progression of them. I'm going to continue working with the LIDAR scans and domestic garden filming, continuing to explore how the camera visualizes the world, and how we can experience and think about it as a result...

For the upcoming lit review, I'm still feeling a little uncertain of how I will be writing, but I know that will disappear once I begin getting into it. I've been focusing on Timothy Morton's work "Thinking Ecology: The Mesh, The Strange Stranger, and the Beautiful Soul", specifically his concepts around ecology as a "mesh" and the notion of strange strangers.

  • I've decided to focus in on Morton's ideas of the mesh and strange strangers. I'm unsure if I'll address both concepts or just focus on one given the word count is small, but both concepts resonate well with what I've been exploring in studio. I think there's also enough space around how Morton mentions technology to also talk about the digital, which is another central theme in my work currently; I think there's space there to speculate about the role of the digital in relation to ecology, especially as Morton discusses both computer- and biological viruses.

  • For real-world and artistic application of those ideas, I'm curious about exploring some of Semiconductor's works and possibly Lauren Greyson's Vital Reenchantments in relation to either or both ideas. The former feels like a good example of how the mesh and strange strangers can be visualised and the latter explores ideas around science and language. Again I'm unsure if I'll cover both texts within the word count or just one, but they feel nicely relevant.

I've also been reading Richard Coyne's Network Nature and On The Last Afternoon: Disrupted Ecologies and Work of Joyce Campbell, both which I'd like to delve into in future. For now I'm going to keep things simple for myself and go with the Morton reading as the first lit review piece.
