Mid-semester break // warming up with some absolute nonsense

Updated: Jul 22, 2022

Have spent the past week taking a complete break from all things uni related. I've also been struggling with my mental health (clinical depression woohoo), so it hasn't been restful so much as just not being able to get my brain to work properly. I'd like to try to get back into my Blender work while I can - I was hoping to get to Rangitoto for some scanning and research for future projects but the weather is looking particularly dicey, so it's a good time for indoors things; I'll make that trip sometime week after next instead.

It's been a while since I've done any original creating in Blender (i.e. completely building something from scratch instead of importing models), so I attempted to make an animation of Trish's Solarpunk Dragon. My attempt is not exact (very Jeff Koons-eques compared to her handmade sculpture), but it was fun modelling, shading and animating everything. I'm hoping to add bones (internal structures that allow posing and animation of objects) to the dragon tomorrow to practice my animation skills, which let's admit are nonexistent.. but for an afternoon project it was a fun nonsense project to make.

From Trish's blog:

"The Solarpunk Dragon is a utopian creature only found in Repairing Angels World and they benefit angels in my world by excreting dragon fruits that are shaped like swirls. The colours of the dragon fruits represent different energies that the angels can place on their bodies, so then they can gain a particular energy that they may be lacking within their bodies. Purple represents the mind, pink equals love, green is growth and grey is drained out energy from the fruits. The energy that the angels gain from the dragon fruits support the solarpunk movement as I’m leaning against natural energy produced from my ecosystem."

(This is no reflection on the original inspiration, but after coming back to it a day later this may quite possibly be the absolute most ridiculous thing I've ever made. It's just so awkward silly. I have not done it justice. He's doing his best. Sometimes when your brain is giving you heck you just have to make something, even if it's nonsense.)

Back to studio work soon!
